Thousands of Calls and “Less than 2% approve”
Santa Fe – Thousands upon thousands of New Mexicans who oppose House Bill 51 (HB 51) called the Governor’s Office to make their voices heard according to recently released documents. HB 51 is a radical abortion bill that continues the status quo practice of allowing an abortion up until the day of birth in New Mexico. In response to a public records request from New Mexico Right to Life, emails produced from inside the Governor’s Office show approximately 25,000 calls came in between February 2nd through the 8thwith the top issue being opposition to HB 51. During the same time, emails show that “less than 2% approve” of HB 51.
“We’re so grateful for all the New Mexicans who are speaking out in support of life,” said Rep. Rebecca Dow (R-Truth or Consequences). “This bill brings to light the reasons why New Mexico is considered the late-term abortion capital of the country.”
The calls continued the week of February 15 when 8000 calls came in and again only 2% in support of HB 51. In the following week 2000 calls again with 98 % opposing HB 51.
“Leaders in this building need to listen to those they represent and oppose this bill,” said Rep. Rod Montoya (R-Farmington). “This bill protects an awful status quo of killing babies up to the day of birth. New Mexicans are overwhelmingly against this practice.”
