Graduation Plan

In San Marcos, Texas, the school superintendent added a requirement that students complete an application to the nearby community college and take a standardized test to graduate.  The school also provided counseling about how much more money a college graduate earned compared with high school graduates.  The result was an 11-percentage point increase in the number of San Marcos High students who attended a Texas college.

Proposal

  • Require that students apply to a college or have committed to an internship, apprenticeship, or military service
  • Require the school district to provide information to graduating students about the financial benefits of graduating from college and the availability of financial aid
