Third Grade Reading

Numerous studies have shown that children learn to read until the third grade and then they spend the rest of their time in the educational system reading to learn.  Unfortunately, far too many of our children are allowed to go on to the fourth grade and beyond without knowing how to read.  This drastically reduces the child’s chances of graduating from high school and succeeding in today’s society.

Proposal

  • Identify struggling readers early and give them the extra assistance they need to become proficient readers by the end of third grade.
  • Require school districts to keep parents informed of their child’s progress at every step through the Give parents the information and resources they need to help their child succeed.
